The historic hamlet of Essex is
located on Lake Champlain. The town was founded in the late 18th
century, and was known for its shipbuilding and iron mining. As Essex entered the 19th century, it became a well developed maritime
town, reaching it's maximum population at the time. However, when
railroads came to the region, the surrounding areas soon were no longer
dependent on Essex and its maritime industries. Because of this, Essex has
become a time capsule, as much of the town includes pre-Civil War
architecture. Currently, the entire hamlet is on the national register of
historic places. Essex in its uniqueness offers a wide range of things,
which will please both the very young and not-so-young. You may glimpse a
Pileated Woodpecker at work, see a pair of Bald Eagles in flight, or just
sit and stare out at the Lake. The Essex Ferry to Charlotte, Vermont runs
year-round giving its passengers a breathtaking twenty minute ride. If you enjoy historic places, nature (on the water and in
the mountains), or are just looking for a place to relax, there is no
better place than the hamlet of Essex. If you do plan to come to Essex,
please stop by at our Restaurant, or if you
plan to spend the night, please stay at the Inn.

The lake covers an area of 490
square miles, making it the sixth largest body of fresh water in the
United States. It is 108 miles long, 12 miles across at its widest point,
and has a maximum depth of 399 feet. Flowing northward from Whitehall, NY
it eventually drains into the St. Lawrence River via the Richelieu River
in Quebec. The lofty peaks of the Adirondacks (maximum height 5,344 feet)
forty miles to the west and the beautiful Green Mountains of Vermont (maximum
height 4,393 feet) fifty miles to the east, are panoramic backdrops for
this great inland sea.
